Pony Youth Baseball & Los Alamitos Youth Baseball

  1. What is PONY Baseball?
PONY Baseball and Softball is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Washington, Pennsylvania. Started in 1951, PONY organizes youth baseball and softball leagues and tournaments, as over 500,000 players annually play PONY in over 4,000 leagues throughout the United States and over 40 countries world-wide. The televised Pony League World Series held annually in August at Washington's Lew Hays Pony Field attracts teenage teams from around the world. Membership is open to children and young adults from age 4 and the leagues are organized in two-year age brackets with "and-under" programs. Hundreds of PONY players have gone on to Major League Baseball careers, including Hall of Fame inductees Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr.

  2. What is Los Alamitos Youth Baseball? How does it serve the community?
Founded in 1958 and originally named Rossmoor Little League, Los Alamitos Youth Baseball (LAYB) is a non-profit, all-volunteer youth baseball organization based in Los Alamitos, California. LAYB offers both Fall and Spring baseball programs for boys and girls starting at age 4. We proudly serve Los Alamitos and neighboring communities including Seal Beach, Long Beach, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton, Westminster, and Cypress. LAYB is a member of PONY Baseball and follows PONY rules. 2026 marks our 63rd year as an incorporated youth baseball league.

Absolutely! We welcome players of all skill levels — from beginners to experienced athletes. Our coaches are trained to help each player develop their skills and confidence at their own pace.

Registration & Team Placement

  1. What is the age / birthdate cutoff for each division? What is the right division for my child?
Please visit the Los Alamitos Youth Baseball - Age Chart page.

  2. When does registration open for the Fall season?
LAYB Fall Season registration typically opens in late June and closes by late August. The Fall Season runs from early September through November, wrapping up before Thanksgiving.

  3. When does registration open for the Spring season?
LAYB Spring Season registration typically opens in late October and closes by early January. Practices usually begin in mid-January, with games starting in February and finishing by late May (including post-season games for applicable divisions).

  4. Can both boys and girls participate in LAYB?
Yes, both boys and girls are welcome to participate!

  5. I'm not a resident of Los Alamitos. Can my child play within LAYB?
Yes! LAYB serves Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Long Beach, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton, Westminster, Cypress, and all other local areas. We welcome athletes from any/all of the surrounding communities. There are no local residential requirements.

  6. How will my child be placed/selected on a team? Can I request a coach or the same team as friends?
LAYB takes pride in ensuring balanced divisions through a friendly draft process. While we do our best to accommodate coach and friend requests, we cannot guarantee them.

Spring Season: Players in Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony divisions attend an evaluation day where coaches assess skills. Teams are then drafted to balance talent across the division.

Fall Season: The focus is on player development, so coach and friend requests are allowed and can be noted during registration.

Foal Division: Coach and friend requests are always welcome for both seasons.

  7. My child was placed on a team that has practices on days my child cannot attend. Can my child switch teams?
Please reach out to your current coach, respective league division Commissioner, and the LAYB Players Agent as soon as possible, prior to any games being played for a given season. They will make reasonable efforts to help accommodate unique situations. You can find contact information for commissioners and the Players Agent here: https://www.layb.org/board

  8. How much does it cost to register my child to play baseball within LAYB? What is the money used for?
LAYB is a non-profit organization proudly serving Los Alamitos and our neighboring communities. We work hard to keep registration fees as low as possible while still covering the essential costs needed to operate a quality youth baseball program.

Registration fees are reviewed and adjusted before each Fall and Spring season to account for changes in operating expenses. These fees help cover the costs of maintaining and improving our fields and facilities, as well as utilities, insurance, volunteer background checks (LiveScan), league equipment, and umpire fees. A portion of your registration also goes toward player uniforms.

LAYB is 100% volunteer-run — none of your registration fees go to board members or coaches. Every dollar collected goes directly toward creating the best possible experience for our players and families.

  9. Do you offer registration discounts for military families?
Yes, we offer discounts for families with active military members. Please contact our Board Communications Manager for more information at communications@layb.org.

  10. Do you offer registration discounts for families with more than one child?
Yes, we offer discounts for families with more than one child. Discounts vary from season to season, and discount pricing can be found within the registration process. The multi-child discount will be applied automatically during the final registration checkout page. There is no need to enter any promo code!

  11. What is your refund policy?
We offer a 100% refund (minus processing fees) for requests made before registration closes for a given season, and a 50% refund (minus processing fees) for requests made after registration closes but before the first scheduled game. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds once the first scheduled game has been played.

  12. My child is more advanced than other children at his age group. Can my child play up a division?
LAYB strongly advocates for all youth athletes to play within their proper age division. However, we will take requests on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to the Players Agent (playersagent@layb.org) prior to player evaluations and player draft. In the unique situation where your youth athlete does play up a division, they will not be eligible for the all-star team at the athlete’s original age division.

  13. My child is less advanced than other children at his age group. Can my child play DOWN a division?
Player safety is our top priority. During player evaluations for the Spring Season, the Board and all coaches will determine if there is a clear need to have any youth athletes play down a division from a safety standpoint. In a situation where your youth athlete plays down a division, they will not be eligible for the all-star team at the lower division.

  14. I missed the registration deadline, but my child really wants to play. What options do I have?
Please contact the Players Agent (playersagent@layb.org) to assess whether your athlete can be placed on a team or on a waitlist.
