Spring Season FAQs

  1. How will my child be placed on a team? Can I request a coach or friends?
LAYB ensures balanced divisions through a friendly draft process. While we do our best to consider coach and friend requests, we cannot guarantee them for Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, or Pony divisions. Players in these divisions attend an evaluation day so coaches can assess basic skills and form balanced teams. For the Foal Division, coach and friend requests are always welcome. Please email: playagent@layb.org and foalcommissioner@layb.org

  2. When are Player Evaluations times for my division?

  3. Does my child need to attend Evaluation Day?
Yes–Evaluations are required for all players registered in Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, and Bronco Divisions.  No evaluations for Foal Division players; Foal teams are assembled by the Foal Commissioner and LAYB Player Agent.

If you cannot attend the January 3–4 evaluation dates, please contact your division Commissioner and Player Agent to arrange the single makeup day. Contact info: layb.org/boardNote: There is only one makeup evaluation per division, as all division coaches must be present.

  4. What can I expect at Player Evaluations?
Evaluations are not tryouts—all players make a team. The purpose is to support balanced divisions and create the best possible baseball experience for all players.
       - All evaluations will be held on the LAYB Fields.
       - All division coaches attend to evaluate players.
       - Players must come dressed in full baseball playing attire along with bat, helmet, and glove.
       - Players will check-in and be sized for a jersey and select their preferred jersey number.
       - At check-in, players will be assigned a reference number, then line-up to be escorted through the evaluation program.
       - Each player will go through the following process, one at a time on one of the LAYB fields:
          a. Batting 3-4 pitches from a coach
          b. Base running at the direction of a coach
          c. Fielding/catching 2-3 ground balls and fly balls thrown by a coach (No fly balls for Shetland)
          d. Throwing 2-3 balls to a coach typically positioned at first base
          e. Pitching, at the division commissioner’s discretion. (No pitching for Shetland)
       - Once your player completes their evaluation, you're free to go.
       - Coaches meet the following week to form teams through a friendly draft designed to maintain division balance.

  5. When will we be notified about our team?
Families will be contacted by their division Commissioner or Coach no later than January 9th.

  6. When will my team practice and what time will it be?
Practices may begin January 12th. Your coach will provide your team’s practice schedule as soon as it is finalized.

  7. When will the Spring Season game schedule be released?
We know families balance many commitments—sports, school, church, and more. The league will release the Spring schedule as soon as possible. Please stay in contact with your Coach, who will receive the schedule from the Commissioner once it is ready.

  8. What time are team pictures on Opening Day?
Team and individual photo times will be shared with Coaches. We will distribute this information as early as possible so families can plan for Opening Day on February 7th.
